Nicotine Addiction May Be a Brain Problem

Researchers at the Scripps Research Institute in Florida found a pathway in the brain that regulates the desire to smoke. When this pathway operates as it should, the desire to smoke is suppressed. However, when the receptor in the brain was genetically altered, the desire and consumption of nicotine was drastically increased. The brain did not issue the stop impulse after the change. The researchers performed this study in rats but they feel that the findings were applicable in humans. There are similar pathways in the human brain that can indicate a predisposition to nicotine addiction.

Around one-third of Americans have the gene that leads to nicotine cravings and smoking. Smoking is the cause of one in ten deaths in US adults due to heart attacks, lung disease like chronic bronchitis and emphysema and stroke. Nicotine addiction is also the cause of about 90% of the cases of lung cancer and may be related to the development of a variety of different types of cancers throughout the body.

The new research findings may help scientists find different treatment options for people with nicotine addictions. Currently most treatments are directed at nicotine replacement through patches, gum or nasal sprays. Other therapy options include antidepressants, medications to relieve the symptoms of withdrawal like Chantix or behavioral modification therapies. New drugs may work on removing the cravings altogether; the new pathway found in the brain may be a first step in finding more helpful treatments.

Teen obesity is rising dramatically in the United States. Not only is being overweight bad for your kid’s health, but it could be devastating to them emotionally when they become a teenager and enter high school. While the number is high for obesity, the pressures of being thin are even stronger now than ever before. This leads to many teens developing low self-esteem, which could ultimately lead to depression. Here are a few steps in helping your teen diet.

Before you can help your teen overcome their weight problem, you’ll need to know how much of a problem obesity really is. When teens are overweight, they have a much higher risk of developing high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, depression and even heart disease. As a parent you want to keep your kids safe and right now they’re not safe. They’re in danger of developing serious health problems.

Your teen knows he/she is overweight, there’s no need to come right out and say to tell him/her that he’s/she’s fat. This is just going to hurt your teen’s self-esteem and lose any motivation for wanting to be healthy. Instead talk about your concern about their health and well-being.

The key to any weight loss is exercise. Create a rule that says your teen will have to do something after school instead of video games or watching TV. Be stern about this. Your teen needs to get exercise and sitting inside all day won’t get them the exercise needed.

Give less portions of food at the dinner table. Teaching your teen to eat less is a good step in the right direction. He/she needs to get used to the idea of eating until your full and only eating smaller portions.

Teenagers don’t always know much about health and fitness. Even though teenagers aren’t exactly happy and willing to talk about their health and how they’re staying in shape, this is a topic that is extremely important and should be covered.

When talking to teens about being healthy and exercising, it’s important to figure out a way to make it interesting and easy for him/her to understand. You want to be open and honest about what could happen if your teen doesn’t eat healthy or get enough exercise.

Many sources will talk about the positive benefits of getting enough exercise. You also want to make sure that your teen will enjoy working out. Do a little research to see the different ways your teen could exercise and pick some that look fun. It’s important that your teen gets about 30 minutes of exercise every other day. Regular exercise will help keep your teen at a healthy weight, which will help him/her avoid high blood pressure and cholesterol problems.

The biggest problem with teen obesity is poor food habits and overeating. You should teach your kids early on the importance of eating healthy foods. Instead of letting your kids eat chips or cookies, give them some apples, grapes or carrots. They might not like the taste right away, but give them time and they will. If they create a fuss, don’t cave. This is your kid’s health here.

Make sure your teen is getting enough sleep. Most teens should have eight to nine hours of sleep each night. Lack of sleep will quickly drop your teen’s energy and the more energy your teen has, the more likely he/she will want to get some exercise.

There are many things you can do to help your kids learn about health and fitness. It’s important to be honest and let him/her know that these are important things to do in order to live a long, healthy life.

Healthy strong nails are not as common as you would think. The nail industry makes millions every year giving women the nails of their dreams precisely because of the difficulty in achieving healthy nails. Other unusual nail issues such as nail discoloration, ridges or lines can also be indicators of disease. For instance signs of kidney and liver disease may appear in the form of damaged or discolored nails. The body is an incredibly efficient machine, each organ works in concert with the others. If one member is not performing so well it will affect the others or may be a sign that something else is going wrong. Nail problems just like problems with the skin or hair may  warn of subtle yet harmful changes in body functions.   If you don’t wash your hands more than usual or use harsh chemicals but still have trouble with your nails, take a look, they may be trying to tell you to increase your dose of vitamins or to pay more attention to your overall health.

Watching a parent age poorly is one of the toughest things you could ever go through. The impulse to try and care for them, as much as they cared for you when you were a child, is strong. But those who require professional care need, nay deserve, more than you are simply capable of providing for them. It is difficult to look past the love and concern you have for your parent and objectively recognize that it is time to bring in someone trained to do this properly.

The topic of senior/elder care is difficult to navigate for those with little to no medical training. It becomes particularly complicated when the emotional pull of an aging family member gets in the way. There are a few clear cut signs that should indicate it is time to bring in a professional, even if it is on a part-time basis. The first is a complicated medical regimen. The more pills needed, the more likely it is for mistakes to occur. When injections are added to the mix, it can oftentimes be easier and safer to have a trained professional guarantee that mistakes don’t happen. Another sign is when physical therapy is a requirement. A trained therapist will not only ensure that the regimen is followed properly, they can also make the appropriate adjustments as the patient progresses or falls behind. The signs do not always come from the parent though.

One should be on the lookout for the ways senior/elder care affects him or her. People should be willing to hire help when their schedules make it more difficult to care for their aging parent. When simply finding time to stop by to make sure everything is going well is too much, the piece of mind that comes with paying someone to oversee the day to day life of their aging family member is always worth the expense.

If you are married and wondering why people have children, then you are not alone. There are a lot of many others who feel this way. As you progress into your life as well as your married life, things will become more apparent. Having a baby will allow these people to vent their latent reservoirs of love towards their children. Apart from experiencing romantic love, which they did and will keep doing, they might feel the urge to feel to love like parents.

Some people have children, thinking that when they become old, their children will look after them. This thought is predominant in countries like India that encourage child-bearing for this if not for others.

Women will do anything for long luxurious hair most end up buying it, dying it, perming it in order to hide their real hair from the world. While some ladies may find it depressing it just might be a good idea to take a good look at your hair and notice subtle changes.

Dry brittle hair: Women suffering with this condition may simply up their hair care regimens without a second thought, we all experience dry hair from time to time but chronic dry or brittle hair could be a sign of malnutrition or hypothyroidism.

Dull lifeless hair: As with dry hair, women with dull hair may try new shampoos or conditioners but certain foods rich in vitamin A,B, E,C and K provide natural shine to hair. Also water is very important for hair health, most the weight of a hair strand is made up of water. The key to shiny, silky hair may just be an increase in or daily intake of water. Dull hair may be an indicator that not only are necessary vitamins lacking in our diet but that we are skimping a little too much on the H20.
