Parenting Tips: Controlling Sibling Rivalry

Sibling rivalry can blow put of proportions when children grow up. Therefore it is important to nip the bud at the beginning itself. Sibling rivalry is nothing but a brewing discontentment amongst two children of a parent. It’s like a discord or a rivalry between a brother to a brother, a brother to a sister, or a sister to a sister.

Sibling rivalries are not a good thing in a family. It does happen during childhood, when two children might fight. But as time passes, things iron out between the two. When things don’t, then sibling rivalry can become a full blown war between two grown up adults.

To stop your children from being rivals with each other, your need to certain things that will make them feel like equals. You need to love them equally. Punish them equally. Care for them equally. Never make the mistake of having a soft corner for a younger child over an older child. This will make the older child loathe even the presence of the younger child.

These childhood angers will also carry on to adulthood. In adulthood it will become more than a small problem. During this time, parents will not have a control over their children. So it is better to deal with it right now itself.

As a parent you need to understand what makes your child shy. Is it because of a lack of something that you wouldn’t know? Or is it because your child chose this path on his or her own?

Sleeping is indeed a very potent health medicine. It can lower blood cholesterol levels, increase the production of relaxation hormones, and aid in having higher memory retention. Sleep is the best health medicine for curing stress and tension. But too much sleep is not good. Sleeping for about 7 to 8 hours a day is fine. And deep sleeping at that.

Sports can help teenagers to become more active in their teenager years. A sport also creates a diversion in activities of interest for teenagers. Including sports in the scheme of things is good for teen and child health. This is because sports create a lot of positive energy in teenagers. And positively energized teenagers are good for the society.

Teenagers who play regular sports have lesser incidences of teen and health issues. This is because they feel more energetic and positive about their lives. Sports create energy of action in people. Sometimes to take decisions or do chores, a lot of energy is spent on thinking about doing it. But regular sports will chase that away. Because in sports, decisions are made fast, and the results need to be immediately created.

That’s why people who have an athletic background have a successful life. They are quite contended with their lives, unless they get into alcohol and drugs. Teen and child health can be improved by including an hour’s sport activity in the schedule.
Now with so many online games, and gaming consoles, sports has taken a backseat.

Sports have to be encouraged in colleges and schools. With so many youngsters ending up as couch potatoes, teenage obesity is on the rise. Whereas, if sports were played by these same teenagers, their idle minds would have never remained idle. Rather they will be teeming with actionable thoughts, on how to make the best of the moment. Sports can create constructive and action oriented thinking in the minds of teenagers.

Children or teenagers who have lived in joint families might not find certain things as they would have liked to be. And this problem applies to the other side of the grass as well. Children who have not lived in joint families might also find things getting a little tough for them when they are asked to share their time, space, or personal belongings.

A teenager’s addiction to drugs or alcohol can affect the rest of the child’s life. It can also change the family dynamic and bring in violent or illegal activity. As a parent you can implement rules and build relationships to deal with addiction.

Talk to your teenager before the problems start. Discuss with your kids the long term effects of drug or alcohol abuse. You can also use positive reinforcement to help your teen set long-term goals towards a certain career or a college education. Have open dialogues where your teenager can discuss problems with their friends. Know who your teen’s friends are and where the group spends their time.

Teach your kid about consequences. You can start this at a young age. This can combat the peer pressure that says that drugs and alcohol are fun. Talk about the legal consequences of underage drinking or illegal drug use.

Watch for signs of addiction. This can include drastic changes in personality or behavior. Keep in contact with your teen’s school. This can alert you to whether or not your teen has missed classes or their grades have dropped. A change in personality doesn’t always mean your teen has a problem with addiction, but it can be an indicator. Volunteer with drug prevention programs in your community or at school, which can also be a learning experience for you.
